Why I Preferred SPM Over IBA (MIS)

6 months back .. Like many of my friends, I have been going through the dilemma of choosing the career path. So after several days of deep thought, career guidance interviews with seniors and elders, I finally made some conclusive observations and some final decisions. I am sharing those with you cuz some of you might be passing through the same situation as I was.

Here are my observations:
- We are observing a real growth in IT arena (40% per year). Already software companies are facing shortage of skilled ppl.
- India has set 36% tax on her IT exports, setting more outsourcing focus on Pakistan.
- Multinational giants like Microsoft, IBM, Telenor, EtSalat Group etc are
eyeing Pakistan for skilled IT workforce.
- Local IT industry is becoming more and more product focused. Thus being more stable and more profitable. Techlogix, ArwenTech, TPS, Etilize, Itim,
ClickMarks, Sibisoft, MobileComplete, Kalsoft and many many others
- FAST(Karachi) will be producing only 120 CS grads in future as compared to current 300 grads. (‘cuz, it has added several other disciplines)
- Immigration has become very easy for experienced ppl, moreover Middle East is literally sucking the skilled workforce outta pakistan.

- There is a significant shortage of CS grads in US too. Recently Microsoft hired around 4400 CS grads, Yahoo hired around 3000 and Google had a similar figure too. And now, Microsoft is hiring ppl from Pk on regular yearly basis.

So, in future, if these trends continue then you can well imagine the demand of CS technical ppl.

In these circumstances, those of us who have spent some time in IT industry
will agree with me that we have now invested too much time and effort to switch our fields. It will be best to further excel our field as it is becoming more and more rewarding day by day.

In this background, if we need to choose our career path, then I personally
believe, it is best to stick to IT. As in my case, I have worked too hard in IT to go back now, it is difficult for me to imagine myself studying courses on finance and accounting.

Now comes the question, k which graduate degree program to persue.

A good option is of course to get some good degree from abroad. But if you are

employed in Pk, and you can see real growth from your employer, then perhaps it is not a good idea to leave the job and to start all over again. In this case … which is true for me, it is good to do MS from some local university.

Now the best local univ(Kchi) is of course – FAST. FAST is offering courses in several aspects .. Databases, Networking, Software Engineering, Computer Sciene and Software Project Management.

Lets imagine now, u have completed the MS and go for employment … what’s the max seat an MS in Databases/Networking will be offered? Database/Network administrator?

But if you wanna reach the highest seat in IT, I believe you should go for MS in Project Management. With so many opportunities round the corner, I think this is the high time we go for it. Moreover, once we bag MS-SPM degree, we can always go abroad for PhD! As there is relatively lesser competiton for PhD than Masters. This option is not available if you go for MBA.

And now, after spending my 1st semester in MS (SPM), I believe that my initial observations were correct. It is only the matter of studying seriously and I appreciate the practical approach of the courses.  And yes .. I haven’t regretted my decision of leaving IBA (MIS) one little bit!
